Finding Strength in the Storm: Happiness Kennedy’s Journey to a New Beginning

Happiness Kennedy, 20 from Dar es Salaam

Happiness Kennedy, a 20-year-old from Bariadi District in Simiyu Region, faced unimaginable challenges after losing both parents at the age of 12. Alongside her younger brother, she endured years of severe mistreatment by relatives, including physical abuse, forced labor, and denial of education. At 15, they fled their abusive environment, attempting to reach Dar es Salaam for a better life. Tragically, the siblings were separated during the journey, leaving Happy to navigate the harsh realities of life on her own. In Dar es Salaam, Happy became a street child before securing jobs in bars and as a housemaid, where she faced exploitation and harassment. At 16, she entered a relationship with a bodaboda rider, who abandoned her upon learning she was pregnant. Left destitute, she attempted suicide multiple times but was ultimately supported by a former colleague who helped her safely deliver her child at 17. Happy’s search for assistance led her to the GH Foundation, where we provided financial aid for her child’s care and arranged accommodation at a children’s home to ease her burdens. When her child turned two, she sought to rebuild her future through education. Choosing vocational training over traditional schooling, she was admitted to Dage Vocational Training College, where the GH Foundation fully funded her studies in hairdressing and makeup. Now a skilled professional, Happy volunteers at a salon in Mbezi Mwisho, refining her craft. The GH Foundation plans to support her in establishing her own business, ensuring a sustainable future. Happy’s journey from despair to hope exemplifies our mission to inspire and transform lives.
