Gender Equality Impact Stories

Judith, a widow who lost her husband in 2019, was left with four children and one on the way. Her husband worked irregularly in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, and after his death, Judith travelled to Kahama for the funeral. Following this, her husband's relatives tried to abuse her sexually, but Judith refused, which led to her being forced out and losing some belongings. Determined to care for her children, Judith returned to Dar es Salaam to search for odd jobs but had no place to stay, so she lived at the Ubungo bus stand. She and her children slept on the benches at night and searched for domestic work during the day. Her children had dropped out of school and became street children.
