Fighting Against Time: The Life-Saving Journey of Mahil Hassan
Mahil Miraj Hassan from Dar es Salaam
Mahil Miraj Hassan, an infant from Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, faced a life-threatening heart condition known as Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF), a complex congenital defect affecting heart function. Diagnosed at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) at six months old, Mahil required urgent surgery costing TZS 6 million.
His mother tirelessly sought financial support, reaching out to hospitals, religious institutions, and local authorities. Despite her efforts—including selling household items and securing official fundraising approval—she was unable to raise the necessary funds. Meanwhile, Mahil’s father had left the country when the child was only four months old and had since lost contact.
Medical research indicates that children with ToF typically do not survive beyond 18 months without intervention. By the time GH Foundation was approached, Mahil was already 14 months old, facing a critical deadline for surgery. Understanding the urgency, GH Foundation fully sponsored Mahil’s medical treatment, ensuring he received life-saving care at JKCI.
Today, Mahil is in good health, leading a normal life. GH Foundation is proud to have played a role in saving his life, reaffirming our commitment to promoting health, ensuring equality, and inspiring hope.
